A corner bar on Fremont Avenue a block off Hylan Boulevard, open from ten in the morning until four the next, seven days short of Sunday. Pool table, darts, televisions, and regulars who have been coming for years. There is no kitchen and no cover.
Mon to Sat, 10am to 4am. Sunday hours vary
A tavern on a residential corner in Dongan Hills with no sign worth speaking of, known on this island for a thin bar pie with the cheese laid under the sauce. The clam pie and the pepperoni are what people order, and the rest of the menu is tavern food. Most of the trade is at the bar with whatever game is on.
Mon to Thu, 11am to 11pm. Fri and Sat, 11am to midnight. Sun, 11am to 11pm
A family pizzeria a couple of doors up Hylan Boulevard from the Colonnade, turning out plain slices, calzones, heroes and baked pastas. Prices are low and the crust is the old-fashioned kind rather than anything reworked. Most people take it out, and there are a few tables if you want to sit.
Daily, 11am to 8:45pm
An Italian bakery on Hylan Boulevard with the ovens going from six in the morning and a kitchen attached that serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. The bread is the reason to come, semolina and lard bread and the rest, and the heroes are built on it. The bakery counter stays open to ten at night.
Tue to Sat, 6am to 10pm. Sun, 6am to 9pm. Closed Monday. The kitchen runs 8am to 9pm
A hot dog truck that has stood on this stretch of Hylan Boulevard since 1962, now parked beside Last Chance Pond. Sabrett franks out of the water, topped with a bright red chili made on the truck, about three dollars. Dawn runs it, the chili runs out, and there is nowhere to sit.
Mon to Sat, 11am to 4pm. Closed Sunday. Chili often sells out before the close
A full-size Staten Island diner at the Old Town Road end of Hylan Boulevard, with the long laminated menu, the pastry case at the door and the banquet hall attached round the back. Breakfast runs all day. It is the building The Looney Bin sets up in, so the comedy is upstairs from the eggs.
Daily, 7am to 10pm
