Yonkers
Bronx River Books
Shops

An independent bookstore that opened in Scarsdale village in 2019, with a general stock, a strong children's section and a steady run of author events. It is a small storefront with the books facing out rather than spine-on, which tells you somebody is choosing them. Staff recommendations are handwritten on cards under the shelves.

Mon to Sat, 10am to 6pm. Sun, 11am to 4pm

Yonkers
Bronx River Pathway
Outside

A paved trail that follows the Bronx River north through Westchester, part of the first linear park in the country, opened in 1925. The stretch nearest the theater runs through trees between the parkway and the water, so the traffic is audible but not visible. It is flat and easy, and you can do fifteen minutes of it and turn back.

Open daily, dawn to dusk

Yonkers
Candlelight Inn
Drinks

A wing joint on Central Park Avenue that has been going since 1955 and is the reason people in this part of Westchester argue about wings at all. The dining area is dark and cluttered and the bar runs the length of it. It serves until one in the morning most nights, which in this stretch of strip mall is close to unheard of.

Mon to Thu, 11:30am to 1am. Fri and Sat, 11:30am to 2am. Sun, 12pm to 1am

Yonkers
Mandy Bean Specialty Coffee
Coffee

An independent roastery on Central Park Avenue that opens at six in the morning and stays open to ten at night, midnight on Friday and Saturday. The drinks are made to order and the pastry case is not the usual wholesale tray. Those late hours are unusual for a coffee place anywhere in lower Westchester, which makes it one of the few places near the theater still serving after a screening.

Mon to Thu, 6am to 10pm. Fri and Sat, 6am to 12am. Sun, 6am to 10pm

Yonkers
Martine's Fine Bake Shoppe
Coffee

A French bakery in Scarsdale village run by a pastry chef trained in France, turning out croissants, éclairs and a case of cakes made on the premises. There are a few tables inside and coffee to go with it. Scarsdale's village center is a short strip of shops around the train station, and this is the one people cross the county for.

Tue to Sat, 7am to 6pm. Sun, 8am to 3pm. Closed Mon

Yonkers
Pizza Beat
Food

An Italian restaurant and bar that opened on Central Park Avenue in 1977 and is still working the same recipes. Miguel Mejia, who started there in 1985 under the original owners, bought it with his family in 2019 and redid the bar. Happy hour runs from three in the afternoon to eight in the evening six days a week, with small plates alongside the drink specials.

Mon to Thu, 11am to 10pm. Fri and Sat, 11am to 11pm. Sun, 11:30am to 10pm. Happy hour Sun to Fri, 3pm to 8pm
