Tai Pan BakeryTongs and a metal tray at the door, then you load up on single-serving buns and pay at the register. Roast pork, taro, red bean, salted egg yolk, plus egg tarts and slices of Swiss roll, most of it between two and four dollars. Coffee and milk tea come from the counter at the back and there are a few seats if you want to sit.

Gao's BBQ & CrabA Northeastern Chinese barbecue place on 39th Avenue that does not open until four in the afternoon and then runs to two in the morning. You order skewers by the stick off a checklist, lamb and chicken hearts and enoki mushrooms, and they come off a charcoal grill with cumin and chili. The crab is the other half of the name and comes by the pound. It is loud and the beer is cold.
