Almondine BakeryHervé Poussot's bakery on Water Street under the Manhattan Bridge, selling baguettes, croissants, éclairs and a case of small tarts, with coffee at the counter and a couple of seats by the window. It has been there since 2002 and the line on a weekend morning goes out the door and takes five minutes. It is shut Monday and Tuesday, which is easy to forget.

Brooklyn Farmacy & Soda FountainA 1920s apothecary on Henry Street that sat empty for years and reopened in 2010 as a working soda fountain, with the original tin ceiling and tile floor still in it. Egg creams, sundaes and a short savory menu, ordered at the counter or at the marble bar. All ages, all afternoon.
