Park Slope, in Brooklyn
Nitehawk Cinema Prospect Park
Repertory Cinema · 188 Prospect Park W
One of the oldest buildings in New York to have continuously housed a movie theater, opened in August 1928 as the Sanders Theatre with a single screen and 1,581 seats.
It became the Pavilion Theatre in 1996, cut down to three screens and 600 seats with a cafe on the second floor, then grew to nine screens. The Landmarks Preservation Commission folded the building into the Park Slope Historic District Extension in 2012.
Nitehawk runs seven screens here now, the smallest holding 48 seats and the largest 194. The bar upstairs does full food and drink service, with local brews and spirits from regional distillers.
The weekly schedule turns over on Friday, and first-run bookings are set on Tuesday for the following week. Weekend brunch screenings and late repertory shows range from rarely seen older prints to new independent features.
