Before
Arepas CafeA narrow Venezuelan place on 36th Avenue that has been griddling arepas on this block since the late 2000s. You order at the counter from a board of about twenty fillings and the reina pepiada is the one most people come back for. There are a dozen or so tables and the turnover is quick. It sits directly across 36th Avenue from Melrose Ballroom's door.

After
Jones Wood FoundryAn English pub on 76th between First and York, named for the wood that covered this part of Manhattan before the grid reached it. Fish and chips or a pie go with cask-style ales. The back garden opens when the weather allows. The front bar takes walk-ins and stays open to midnight after the kitchen has stopped. Quieter on a weekday than almost anything else on this stretch.
