Cafe MadelineA small cafe on Cortelyou Road that opens at seven every morning and stays on until eight at night, which is unusual this far down Flatbush. Espresso and drip come from the counter. Pastries are made on site. Order eggs if you want a plate rather than a cup. Tables fill on weekend mornings and empty out by the middle of the afternoon.

Tip-Top Bar & GrillWalter Alston opened this as a pool hall in the early 1950s and his daughter Linda Greer runs it now. The jukebox plays seventies R&B, the Christmas lights and the birthday banner stay up all year, and a shot with a beer is five dollars. Thursday is snacky hour, when the wings and hot sausages are free.
