Prospect Lefferts Gardens, in Brooklyn
Lefferts Historic House
Occasional Screening Host · 452 Flatbush Ave
An 18th-century Flatbush farmhouse moved into Prospect Park in 1918, now a landmark museum with a working garden and exhibits about the family and the people they enslaved.
The farmhouse originally stood at 563 Flatbush Avenue near Maple Street, a few blocks from the park, and was hauled onto park land rather than knocked down. The Prospect Park Alliance operates it today.
Under a project called ReImagine Lefferts, the Alliance has been building new indoor and outdoor exhibits with descendant and neighboring communities, scholars and artists, funded by a grant from the Mellon Foundation.
One result is Ancestral Whispers, an installation of 25 fabric banners by Adama Delphine Fawundu hung across the facade, one for each of the 25 enslaved Africans documented as having been held at the house.
