Maspeth DinerA working diner on Grand Avenue with a counter, booths and the full three-meal menu. It opens at seven in the morning every day and closes at seven in the evening, which is the opposite shape of most diners and the thing to know before you plan around it. Mondays it shuts at four. It is the plainest option in Maspeth and also the only one open at breakfast.

Friend's TavernThe oldest operating gay bar in Queens, on Roosevelt Avenue since 1989, owned by Eduardo Valentin and Casimiro Villa. It has served the Latino LGBT community here for most of that time and the music and the crowd reflect that rather than anything imported from Manhattan. Happy hour runs from four in the afternoon and the door stays open until four in the morning.
