Sunnyside, in Queens
Thalia Spanish Theatre
Off-Off-Broadway / Spanish-language · 41-17 Greenpoint Ave
Thalia brings Spanish and Latin American plays, music and dance to Sunnyside, with bilingual productions broadening the audience.
Actress and director Silvia Brito founded the company in 1977. Early programming emphasized zarzuela, the Spanish musical form that combines operatic singing with spoken dialogue.
The repertoire expanded to reflect Queens' Latin American communities. Some plays alternate English and Spanish performances, making the language of a particular date worth checking before booking.
