Astoria, in Queens
Museum of the Moving Image
Museum Cinema · 36-01 35th Ave
A museum of film and television inside one of thirteen buildings of the old Astoria studio complex, where Paramount made pictures on the East Coast from 1920.
Famous Players-Lasky put the studio up, and hundreds of silent and early sound productions were shot on the site. The Army took it over in 1942 to make training films, renaming it the Signal Corps Photographic Center, and left in 1970.
The buildings fell into disrepair after that. The museum opened in 1988 in a section renovated by Gwathmey Siegel & Associates, which is the part visitors walk into today.
Screenings run in the 267-seat Sumner M. Redstone Theater and the 68-seat Celeste and Armand Bartos Screening Room, so a retrospective and a single showing can go on at the same time.
