Lassen & HennigsA long deli on Montague with a sandwich counter down one side, prepared food in the case and a bakery section by the register. You order at the counter and eat at one of the small tables or take it five blocks west to the Promenade. It opens at 7am and stays open to 9pm on weekdays, which is wider than almost anything else on the street.

The Brooklyn InnA corner bar at Hoyt and Bergen inside the Boerum Hill Historic District, with a carved mahogany back bar, a pressed tin ceiling and a pool table through the arch at the back. There is no food, no television and no music loud enough to shout over. It is cash only, which is the fastest way to tell how little has changed.
