Chelsea, in Manhattan

The Joyce Theater

Dance House · 175 Eighth Ave

Official site Directions

The Joyce is one of the few theaters in the country built by dancers for dance, converted from a Chelsea movie house that the neighborhood had shut down.

The building was the Elgin, a revival movie house that the community closed after it began showing pornographic films. A two-year renovation guided by architect Hugh Hardy preserved and extended the art-deco patterned brick facade.

The Joyce presents visiting companies across a long season rather than housing one resident troupe, so the style changes week to week.
