Japan Society made film one of its core programs in the early 1970s. Its JAPAN CUTS festival, launched in 2007, is the largest festival of new Japanese film in North America.

The commitment followed Donald Richie's 1970 survey of Japanese cinema at MoMA, and in 1979 the organization set up the Japan Film Center to make it a permanent, year-round operation. Akira Kurosawa and Toshiro Mifune both came in person.

The 262-seat theater on East 47th Street runs the John and Miyoko Davey Classics series year-round, given to restorations and rediscoveries, with retrospectives, thematic series and premieres filling out the calendar.
