Livingston, in Staten Island
Snug Harbor Cultural Center
Cultural Center · 1000 Richmond Ter
An 83-acre campus on Staten Island's north shore that started in the early 1800s as a charitable home for retired sailors and now holds museums, gardens and stages.
The founding charter described the men it took in as aged, decrepit and worn-out sailors. The buildings they lived in are the buildings the arts organizations use now, which is why the grounds read as a campus rather than as a single institution.
Snug Harbor is a Smithsonian Affiliate and part of the NYC Cultural Institutions Group. Outdoor art installations across the grounds are free to see, and the site is used for filming and photography as well as for its own programs.
