Washington Heights, in Manhattan
United Palace
Concert Hall · 4140 Broadway
A 3,293-seat movie palace on upper Broadway that a congregation bought rather than let it be demolished, and that still books films and concerts.
Thomas Lamb designed it and Harold Rambusch did the interiors. The New York Times once described the result as Byzantine-Romanesque-Indo-Hindu-Sino-Moorish-Persian-Eclectic-Rococo-Deco, and called it a kitchen sink masterpiece.
It is the fourth largest venue of its kind in Manhattan and has been open more than ninety years. The organization now called the United Palace of Spiritual Arts holds the building and runs it as both a congregation's home and a stage.
