East Williamsburg, in Brooklyn
Refuge
DIY Space · 360 Ten Eyck Street
Refuge was designed around its sound system, with a cushioned wooden dance floor giving the East Williamsburg club a practical reason for longer sets.
Co-founder Craig 'Shorty' Bernabeu built the four-point analog speaker system. John Dimatteo developed the venue with him, while Al Fierstein handled acoustic design.
The freestanding industrial building retains brick walls and a high ceiling. Programming includes house music and daytime parties, with the physical setup aimed at sustained dancing.
