Echo Park

The parent churreria has been in Mexico City since 1935. This opened January 29, 2026 in the old Patra Burgers stand on the Sunset and Laveta corner, painted white and trimmed in blue neon, and it is the first Los Angeles branch and the second in the country after Costa Mesa. Churros and thick chocolate are the whole point.

Sunday to Thursday 8am to 11pm, Friday and Saturday 8am to 1am.

A city lake with a lotus bed that blooms in summer, a fountain in the middle and a path all the way around. Wheel Fun Rentals runs swan-shaped pedal boats from the boathouse on the east side, one hour at a time. Walking the loop costs nothing.

Chicago deep dish baked to order in a pan, which means about forty minutes from ordering to eating. The shop opened on this stretch of Sunset in 2004 and makes its own masa and sauces. Order when you get there and drink something while it bakes.

Richard Neutra's own house, built in 1932 as the VDL Research House on the east bank of the Silver Lake Reservoir, with a Garden House added at the end of the decade. A fire in 1963 left only the Garden House and the original basement, and Neutra rebuilt the main residence with his son and partner Dion, adding floors and a penthouse solarium on top. Cal Poly Pomona's College of Environmental Design holds it now and opens it to the public on Saturdays.

An independent bookstore that opened on Sunset in November 2008, with new and used stock and a cafe at the back that pours coffee, beer and wine. The 9pm close is unusual for a bookshop and makes it usable on the way to a show.

A Sunset Boulevard bar that puts out free tacos, popcorn and peanuts when the kitchen feels like it, and runs a beer and whiskey shot for nine dollars. Karaoke on Mondays. The noon open is the earliest on this stretch.
