Yuca'sSocorro Herrera and her husband Jaime turned an eight-by-ten-foot shoeshine stand into this on April 1, 1976, cooking the Merida recipes she grew up with. It won a James Beard America's Classics award in 2005. Cochinita pibil is the order; there are also vaporcitos and Yucatan tamales. Socorro died in December 2024 and her daughters Dora and Margie run it now.

Zankou ChickenThe Iskenderian family opened their first Los Angeles branch here at Sunset and Normandie in 1984, twenty-two years after the original in Beirut. Rotisserie chicken, shawarma and the garlic sauce the place is known for, ordered at a counter in a mini-mall. It runs to midnight every night.
