Wednesday, January 13, 2027 · 8:00 PM · Zebulon, Central L.A.

The Read

Wire made three albums in three years that each sounded like a different band, and Newman has been restless since. Spigel's work with Minimal Compact runs parallel. This is post-punk history played by the people who made it.

The Venue

Socorro Herrera and her husband Jaime turned an eight-by-ten-foot shoeshine stand into this on April 1, 1976, cooking the Merida recipes she grew up with. It won a James Beard America's Classics award in 2005. Cochinita pibil is the order; there are also vaporcitos and Yucatan tamales. Socorro died in December 2024 and her daughters Dora and Margie run it now.

Armet and Davis built this in 1959, the firm that drew the Norms, Denny's and Bob's Big Boy prototypes, and it shows in the cantilevered swooping roof, the zig-zag railings and the freestanding sign. It opened as Conrad's, Peter Metsos took it over in 1974 and renamed it Astro, and the City Council made it a Historic-Cultural Monument by unanimous vote in October 2024. Pink leather booths, etched glass, a full diner menu.
