Attari Sandwich ShopA counter at the back of Attari Plaza with a shaded courtyard of outdoor tables behind it. The menu runs to tongue sandwiches, kotlet and a bowl of ash reshteh that arrives whether or not you ordered soup. It has been on this block of Westwood Boulevard since the early 1990s.

The Apple PanA wooden shack on Pico that has been serving since 1947, with twenty-six stools around a U-shaped counter and no tables at all. You wait standing behind whoever is eating, then take the stool when it opens. The hickory burger and the pie have both been on the menu since the first day, and the bill arrives handwritten.
