California Botanic GardenEighty-six acres north of the Claremont Colleges planted entirely with California natives, which makes it the largest garden in the state devoted to them. The collections run past twenty-two thousand plants, some of them rare or endangered, and the paths are wide and mostly flat. It closes at five, so this is a daytime stop and a long one if you let it be.

Bert & Rocky's Cream CompanyAn ice cream counter on Yale Avenue with a candy case at the front and a line that runs out onto the sidewalk on a warm evening. They make their own and the waffle cones get pressed where you can see them. It opens at noon and runs to nine most nights and ten on Friday and Saturday, which makes it the Village's default after-show stop.
