John McCauley’s band came up out of Providence playing songs that could go folk, country, or straight bar-rock depending on the night and the hour. The voice is a rasp with real range underneath it, and the writing has always been better than the shambolic delivery lets on. Two decades in, the ragged edges remain part of how the songs move. The Basement East suits a band that treats the setlist as a suggestion. At the Basement East, the crowd stands close enough to change the temperature of the set. Songs can come loose without losing their center, and a left-field cover would be consistent with the band’s habits. The quieter song halfway through may be what sticks.
