Christmas night is the strangest slot in the Nashville calendar. The obligations are over, most stages in town are dark, and everyone left standing is either finished with their relatives or avoiding them. A dance party fits that mood. There is no bill demanding attention, only a floor giving the night somewhere to go. The 5 Spot draws practiced dancers alongside people who simply needed to leave the house. By nine, the crowd should be somewhere between holiday recovery and a fresh start on the evening; Prince will probably turn up before closing.
