Theater · 2804 Opryland Dr
The Opry left the Ryman on March 15, 1974. President Nixon played piano on opening night. Roy Acuff supervised the installation of the circle of wood cut from the Ryman stage.
The circle is six feet across, white oak and maple, cut from an eight-foot square of the old Ryman floor and set into the center of the new stage. Roy Acuff told the workers 'move it just a hair to the right.' Every performer who steps into the spotlight steps onto it. The house holds 4,400. The pews are cushioned now, unlike the Ryman's bare wood, but the format is unchanged: short sets, many artists, broadcast-rooted ceremony.
Its distance from downtown is part of the experience. The crowd arrives for the institution as much as for whoever's on the bill, and that's been true since 1925.
