On Ninth Avenue since 1992, baking overnight in the back. Semolina with golden raisins and fennel, and a coffee to carry up the block.

A block-through garden the neighborhood bought back from the city for a dollar in 1984. The front half stays open to anyone during daylight.

Lawn and a pier over the Hudson five minutes from Terminal 5. A good way to spend the gap between doors and the set you actually came for.

A butcher counter on Ninth since 1932, still cutting to order. Sausage made in the back and sold by the pound.

Open bins of spices and grains weighed out by hand. A survivor of the Greek stretch of Ninth Avenue, still run by the same family.

Sour cream apple walnut pie by the slice since 1985. Four tables and a case, and they will warm it if you ask.

Opened in 2023 and built to look like it never wasn't there. Named for the scenic artists' union local. Cheap beer and pinball, and nobody minds that you came straight from work.

A Greek bakery that still rolls its own phyllo by hand. Spanakopita and galaktoboureko from a family that has worked the counter since 1923.
Tue to Sat, 10am to 6pm. Closed Sunday and Monday
Cheap pitchers and a free hot dog with every drink. The duct-taped red booths have outlasted most of the block around them.

Jim Lahey's bakery, with pizza bianca cut off the slab at the counter. A few stools face the ovens.

An 1868 waterfront bar with the original mahogany still in place. Shepherd's pie and a Guinness, and nobody moves you along.

Hainanese chicken rice from the chef who ran Lou Yau Kee before it closed. A counter operation that opens at four and sells out some nights.
Daily from 4pm, until sold out
A working Ninth Avenue diner where Seinfeld wrote. Breakfast runs all day and the counter turns over fast.
