Kingsbridge / Riverdale
El Malecón
Food

A Dominican restaurant on Broadway under the 1 train that calls itself the king of roasted chicken and is mostly taken at its word. Rotisserie chicken, mofongo and rice and beans, served fast, in a plain dining area with a takeout counter at the front. It opens at nine in the morning and runs to ten at night, later on Friday and Saturday. This is a family operation with a handful of locations rather than a chain.

Mon to Thu and Sun, 9am to 10pm. Fri and Sat, 8am to 11pm

Liebman's Kosher Delicatessen
Food

Joe Liebman opened this on West 235th at Johnson Avenue in 1953 and it is the last kosher deli left in the Bronx. Pastrami and corned beef cut by hand, matzo ball soup, a counter and a row of booths. Open seven days from eleven in the morning until nine at night.

Kingsbridge / Riverdale
Lloyd's Carrot Cake
Food

Lloyd Adams opened this on Broadway in 1985 to sell one cake. He and his wife Betty have both died and their family runs it now, still selling carrot cake by the slice and whole from a counter with no tables. The pineapple coconut and the red velvet are the other two things they make.

Mon to Fri, 9am to 7pm. Sat, 10am to 6pm. Closed Sunday

Kingsbridge / Riverdale
Mon Amour Coffee & Wine
Coffee

A café on West 238th between Broadway and Riverdale Avenue that does espresso in the morning and wine later, with baked goods and sandwiches made on the premises. It opens at seven on weekdays. There are small tables inside and the counter turns over quickly, so you are not waiting for a seat. The same owners run places in Inwood and Yonkers.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 8pm. Sat, 8am to 8pm. Sun, 9am to 6pm

Kingsbridge / Riverdale
S&S Cheesecake
Shops

A family bakery that has made one thing in the same West 238th Street storefront for more than fifty years. You walk into what is effectively the factory, buy a cheesecake over the counter and leave. There is no seating and no menu, and the operation is mostly wholesale with a retail window attached.

Mon to Fri, 8:30am to 3pm. Closed Saturday and Sunday. Hours move, so call first

Kingsbridge / Riverdale
Savor Coffee and More
Coffee

Coffee gives way to beer and wine at this Riverdale Avenue café just off West 238th. It runs from eight in the morning until ten at night every day. There is a food menu alongside the drinks, so it works as a meal or as a cup. The ten o'clock close is unusual for a café anywhere in the Bronx.

Daily, 8am to 10pm

Kingsbridge / Riverdale
Van Cortlandt House Museum
Culture

The oldest building in the Bronx, a Georgian fieldstone house Frederick Van Cortlandt began in 1748 on land his family had farmed since 1691. Washington and Rochambeau both used it during the war. You tour it yourself rather than on a guide's schedule, and it is five dollars, or nothing on a Wednesday.

Kingsbridge / Riverdale
Van Cortlandt Park
Outside

More than a thousand acres starting at the top of Broadway, with a lake, the oldest public golf course in the country and the cross-country course that most New York high schools have run. The Parade Ground at the Broadway end is the flat open part and it is where everything happens. The Putnam Trail runs north from the lake on an old railway bed.

Open 6am to 1am daily, the standard NYC Parks schedule

Kingsbridge / Riverdale
Wave Hill
Outside

Twenty-eight acres of garden on the bluff above the Hudson, looking straight across at the Palisades. It was a private estate that Mark Twain and Theodore Roosevelt both rented at different points, and it became a public garden in 1965. There is a pergola, a glasshouse, wild gardens and a lot of benches pointed at the river.

Tue to Sun, 10am to 5:30pm, last entry 5pm. Closed Monday. Ten dollars adults, six students and seniors, four for children six and up, free on Thursdays
