West Nyack
Buttermilk Falls County Park
Outside

Seventy-five acres of steep woodland on South Greenbush Road, opened to the public in 1975, built around a waterfall coming down the Palisades ridge. A short path leads from the parking area to the falls and the stream below them, and other trails climb to two overlooks that take in the Ramapos to the west and South Mountain to the north. The whole circuit is about a mile and a quarter and takes an hour. There is no fee.

West Nyack
Mountainview Nature Park
Outside

Eighty-three acres of wooded hillside on the east side of Mountainview Avenue, held by Rockland County and managed for hiking rather than recreation. The Long Path runs through it. There are two viewpoints, one west over the Ramapos and one east to the bridge across the Thruway cut, and a wet stretch near the top called Bear Swamp. A full loop is about three miles with 567 feet of climb.

Daily, 8am to 8pm
