Greenwich Village, in Manhattan
Quad Cinema
Arthouse Cinema · 34 W 13th St
When it opened in October 1972 it was the first theater in the city to put multiple screens under one roof. There are still four of them, two blocks from Union Square.
A full renovation rebuilt the place without renaming it. The lobby now has a video wall assembled from thirty-two flat screens and a fifty-foot concession counter, and the seats were brought in from Norway.
Programming is deliberately unfussy: high and low, foreign and domestic, fiction and documentary, art house and grindhouse. The audience is students from NYU, the New School and FIT mixed with people who have lived on the block for decades.
