Upper West Side, in Manhattan
Symphony Space
Concert Hall · Upper Level, 2537 Broadway
Two theaters at Broadway and 95th Street, one from 1918 at street level and the Thalia from 1931 in the basement below it, sharing a bill of music, film and readings.
Isaiah Sheffer and Allan Miller rented the old Symphony Theatre for a free twelve-hour marathon called Wall to Wall Bach, with the audience invited to take part. That one day of programming became the organization that has held the building since.
The Thalia spent generations as a movie house before a $13 million renovation folded it into the larger operation, paid for partly by the sale of air rights. It now carries the name Leonard Nimoy Thalia Theatre.
Programming reaches across theater, film, literature, music and dance, with a separate strand for families, so the two stages are rarely doing the same kind of thing on the same day.
