The gilded limestone building at the corner of Grand Army Plaza, with the bronze figures across the front and a reading floor that anyone can sit on without a card. There is an exhibition space off the lobby and a café inside. It is open until nine Monday through Thursday, which is unusual for a library and useful for an evening door.
Mon to Thu, 9am to 9pm. Fri and Sat, 9am to 6pm. Sun, 1pm to 5pm
A ramen shop on Vanderbilt Avenue opened by cooks who came out of Morimoto's kitchen, doing four or five broths and a plate of kale salad that people order out of habit. No bookings. You give your name and stand outside or at the counter until a stool opens.
Mon, 5:30pm to 9pm. Tue, closed. Wed, Thu and Sun, 5:30pm to 9pm. Fri and Sat, 5:30pm to 10pm
GrowNYC's flagship Brooklyn market, set up along the northwest corner of Prospect Park every Saturday of the year. Upstate growers, a cider stand, bread, and a compost and textile drop-off at the Flatbush end. It is outdoors and it runs in January the same as it does in July.
Saturdays only, 8am to 4pm, year-round
Come in at the Grand Army Plaza entrance and the path drops you under Endale Arch, which Olmsted and Vaux built to cut off the city before it opens onto the mile-long Long Meadow. The arch was stripped back to its original banded woodwork and sandstone in a restoration finished in 2020. Past it the meadow is flat, open and full of people lying on the grass, and it runs most of the length of the park.
Park open every day, 5am to 1am
A beer bar on Washington Avenue with a long back yard that dogs are welcome in and a draft list in the high teens. Nobody is working the door and nobody is checking a list. It is the kind of place where the same people are there on a Tuesday at six and a Saturday at ten.
Mon to Thu, 5pm to 11pm. Fri, 3pm to 11pm. Sat and Sun, 1pm to 11pm
