Open at 32 Withers Street since 1900 and run by Anthony Bamonte since the late 1960s, with his daughters working it now. Waiters in jackets, a payphone nook by the door, veal parmigiana and linguine with clam sauce. Closed Monday and Tuesday.

Frank Pinello opened this in 2010 in a former bakery on Havemeyer Street and bakes in the wood-burning oven that was already there. The white slice is what to order. Wood benches, paper plates, a few dollars a slice.

A corner bar at Grand and Roebling with a jukebox that runs to rock and soul and a handful of taps. Prices have not moved much. It opens at 1pm on weekends and stays open to 4am Friday and Saturday. Nothing about it is decorated.

Gabe Fowler opened this in 2008 in an old bakery storefront and kept the sign. It stocks comics, zines and art books, much of it self-published and sold on consignment. Fowler also runs Comic Arts Brooklyn out of it.

Five acres along the East River on the site of the Domino Sugar Refinery, with an elevated walkway built from the old crane tracks and syrup tanks left standing in the middle of it. It runs from Grand Street down to South 5th, directly under the Williamsburg Bridge at the far end. Open at 6am.

Open since 1990 and on North 9th Street since 2013, selling new and used LPs and 7-inches along with turntables and amps. The buy counter is the point as much as the racks. Closed Wednesdays.

Mexico City street food on Berry Street since 2008, with tacos al pastor cut off the spit and tostadas de tinga at a few dollars each. It is cash-friendly, small, and does not take a reservation. Closed Tuesdays.

Seven acres of lawn on the East River at the foot of North 8th Street, on the site of the old Brooklyn Eastern District Terminal. It was East River State Park until 2020, when the state renamed it for Marsha P. Johnson. The Manhattan skyline sits directly across the water.

Thirty-five acres straddling the line between Williamsburg and Greenpoint, opened in 1906, with a running track around the playing field and a WPA-era pool at the Lorimer Street end. Sunday afternoons the soccer pitches are all in use. It is the one piece of open ground both neighborhoods share.

Open on Lorimer Street since 2002 and known locally as Metro, with a pool table and a large backyard that runs all summer. Drag and go-go nights follow a rotating schedule. Happy hour runs from 3pm to 8pm every day. It closes at 4am seven nights.

A first-run and repertory cinema on Metropolitan Avenue, open since 2011 in the shell of the old Charles Theater, with food and drink brought to the seat during the film. It still runs 35mm. Matinees start in the late morning on weekends.

Long communal tables under a retractable roof, with a grill going at the back turning out sausage and pork chops. There is live music most nights and it costs nothing to sit through it. The grill runs later than the kitchen, so a late arrival still eats.

A bar has operated in this 1887 corner building for most of the time since, and the Peter Doelger Brewing glass over the door is still there. The food is burgers and fish and chips at a price that has not chased the neighborhood. Closed Mondays, which catches people out.

A small museum of New York objects that started as a street-facing window display in an apartment and became a storefront on Metropolitan Avenue. The collection runs to subway tokens, Statue of Liberty souvenirs, seltzer bottles and a shrine to Jackie Robinson. Admission is a few dollars and the whole visit takes half an hour.

Fried chicken and honey-butter biscuits out of a bar kitchen on Metropolitan Avenue, served until 4am seven nights. The drinks are tiki-adjacent and cheap. Wood panelling, vinyl booths, nothing about it staged.

Twenty-odd years on the corner of Berry and North 3rd, pouring cheap beer and putting out bowls of Utz cheese balls for nothing. The kitchen does chili dogs and Frito pie. There is a pool table, a dartboard and a jukebox that has not been curated by anyone.

Family run since the 1980s on the corner opposite McCarren Park, with a pool table and cheap beer and the ball game on. It opens at 11am and does not close until 4am, every day of the week. Nothing about it has been updated to match what went up around it.

A Bedford Avenue slice counter open since the 1980s, with hand-lettered signs covering most of the wall and a vegan slice that predates the trend by a decade. Slices go over the counter until 2am on Friday and Saturday. You eat standing up.
