East Village
Abraço
Coffee

An espresso counter on East 7th Street that has been going since 2007 and roasts what it pours. The olive oil cake comes out of the oven in the morning and goes fast. There is standing at the counter and not much seating behind it.

Mon to Thu, 8am to 8pm. Fri and Sat, 8am to 10pm. Sun, 9am to 6pm

Navy Yard
Almondine Bakery
Coffee

Hervé Poussot's bakery on Water Street under the Manhattan Bridge, selling baguettes, croissants, éclairs and a case of small tarts, with coffee at the counter and a couple of seats by the window. It has been there since 2002 and the line on a weekend morning goes out the door and takes five minutes. It is shut Monday and Tuesday, which is easy to forget.

Wed to Sun, 8:30am to 6pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday

Hell's Kitchen
Amy's Bread
Coffee

On Ninth Avenue since 1992, baking overnight in the back. Semolina with golden raisins and fennel, and a coffee to carry up the block.

Daily, 7:30am to 8pm

East Williamsburg
Ange Noir Cafe
Coffee

A small French-leaning cafe on Varet Street that pours wine and beer alongside the coffee. Breakfast runs all day and the food is eggs and sandwiches rather than a pastry case. The block is residential and quiet compared with Bogart Street two over.

Monday to Friday 7:30am to 4pm. Saturday and Sunday 7:30am to 4:30pm.

Coney Island
Bakery La Brioche Café
Coffee

An old bakery on the main strip under the elevated tracks, with glass cases of hazelnut meringues, rum balls, glazed brioche and the kind of oversized cream cake that gets bought whole for a birthday. There is coffee and a few seats. It opens at seven in the morning, earlier than anything else useful nearby.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 7pm. Weekend hours not confirmed

Downtown Jersey City
Beechwood Cafe
Coffee

A café and small market on Grove Street that serves breakfast all day and starts lunch at 11am. The coffee is the reason to sit down rather than take it out, and the tables turn over steadily on a weekend morning without anyone taking a name. It is a full kitchen rather than a pastry case.

Daily from 8am. Breakfast all day, lunch from 11am, brunch 8am to 3:30pm. Closing time varies by day and is not reliably published

Elizabeth
Brisas Bakery & Restaurant
Coffee

Family owned since 1998 and open at five in the morning, this is a Colombian bakery counter with a restaurant behind it. The case holds pan de bono, buñuelos and empanadas, and the coffee is Colombian. Later in the day it turns into a full kitchen doing bandeja paisa and sancocho, and there is a bar for aguardiente and juices.

Mon to Thu, 5am to 9pm. Fri and Sat, 5am to 11pm. Sun, 5am to 9pm

Washington Heights
Buunni Coffee
Coffee

A husband and wife who met in Ethiopia run this, and the coffee comes from small growers there. This Pinehurst Avenue shop is the original of their three uptown cafes, tucked on the quiet side street above the 181st Street elevators. Bennett Park is a minute away if you want to drink it outside.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 5pm. Sat and Sun, 8am to 5pm

Inwood
Buunni Coffee Inwood
Coffee

The largest of Buunni's uptown cafes, on Broadway between 207th and Isham, and the one they use for art shows and community events. Same Ethiopian coffee from the same small growers as the Pinehurst original. It is five minutes from the 207th Street station.

Mon to Fri, 7:30am to 4:30pm. Sat and Sun, 8am to 4:30pm

Midtown East
Café Bilboquet
Coffee

Philippe Delgrange opened this as the relaxed counterpart to Le Bilboquet, his restaurant of the same name a block away. Fourteen hundred square feet across the ground floor and the basement, doing coffee and pastries during the day and salads, sandwiches and quiche through lunch, with wine, beer and champagne if the afternoon goes that way.

Monday to Friday 7am to 7pm. Saturday 8am to 7pm. Sunday 8am to 6pm.

Port Richmond
Cafe Con Pan
Coffee

A Mexican bakery and coffee counter at the top of Port Richmond Avenue, in the storefront that was Oven Baked Bakery for over a century before this family took it over in 2009. Pan dulce and conchas come off trays you work through with tongs, and there is a kitchen behind doing tortas, tacos and antojitos. It opens at eight and runs to half ten at night, which is the longest day of anything on the avenue.

Mon to Fri, 8am to 10:30pm. Weekend hours are posted shorter by some listings and are flagged as unverified

Greenpoint
Café Grumpy
Coffee

The first Café Grumpy, open on Meserole Avenue since 2005, with the roastery next door. It goes a long way back from the street so there is usually somewhere to sit. Open 7am to 7pm every day.

Daily, 7am to 7pm

Flatbush
Cafe Madeline
Coffee

A small cafe on Cortelyou Road that opens at seven every morning and stays on until eight at night, which is unusual this far down Flatbush. Espresso and drip come from the counter. Pastries are made on site. Order eggs if you want a plate rather than a cup. Tables fill on weekend mornings and empty out by the middle of the afternoon.

Daily, 7am to 8pm

Park Slope
Café Regular du Nord
Coffee

A small espresso bar tucked onto Berkeley Place off Seventh Avenue, with a zinc-topped counter, a few stools and newspapers people actually read. It does espresso and a short list of pastry and nothing else. The name is a joke about being the northern branch of a café six blocks away.

Every day, 8am to 4pm

Greenwich Village
Caffè Reggio
Coffee

Domenico Parisi opened this on MacDougal Street in 1927 and the 1902 espresso machine he bought is still standing in the front. The walls are hung with Italian paintings and an old Medici bench, and nobody hurries you off a marble table. It runs to three in the morning most nights, which is later than almost any other café in the neighborhood.

Mon to Thu and Sun, 9am to 3am. Fri and Sat, 9am to 4:30am

St. George / Stapleton
Caffinated New Yorker
Coffee

A small independent coffee bar in a Bay Street storefront a few blocks up from the Stapleton waterfront, doing espresso drinks, matcha, sandwiches and doughnuts. The specialty lattes top out around five dollars, which is the giveaway that it is built for people who live on the block rather than for anyone off the ferry. It is a daytime operation and it shuts in the afternoon.

Mon and Tue, 8am to 4pm. Thu, 8am to 4pm. Fri and Sat, 9am to 5pm. Sun, 9am to 4pm. Closed Wednesday

Garment District
Culture Espresso
Coffee

Good espresso and a chocolate chip cookie that comes out of the oven in the afternoon. Counter seating and not much of it.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 7pm. Weekends, 8am to 6pm

Bedford Park
Egidio Pastry Shop
Coffee

The oldest pastry shop in Bronx Little Italy, opened in 1912 and still using the original oven and the original recipes. Sfogliatelle, pignoli cookies and cannoli in the cases. Espresso and coffee come to the tables in a tiled interior that has not been refitted. It is around the corner from the Arthur Avenue crowd rather than on it. You can sit down here, which matters because most of the bakeries on this street are counters.

Daily, 7am to 7pm. The Bronx Little Italy merchant file posts 7am to 8pm, so the later hour is possible but not relied on here

Rutherford
erie coffeeshop & bakery
Coffee

A family-run bake shop on Franklin Place, open since 2014, doing sweet and savory pastry alongside coffee from a local roaster. The counter is the whole operation and the seating is limited, so people take it out onto the block as often as not. It is open Wednesday through Sunday and closes at three in the afternoon.

Wed to Sun, 8am to 3pm. Closed Monday and Tuesday

Flushing
Fang Gourmet Tea
Coffee

A tea shop on the ground floor at Main and 37th, three minutes from Flushing Town Hall, where you can sit down and have leaves brewed for you properly rather than buying a cup to carry out. Oolong and puerh are what the counter steers people toward and the shelves behind are given over to pots and cups. They run tea classes for anyone who wants the longer version. It shuts at six, so this is daytime and early evening only.

Daily, 10:30am to 6pm

Gowanus
Four & Twenty Blackbirds
Coffee

Melissa and Emily Elsen, sisters from South Dakota, started selling pie in 2009 and opened this shop on Third Avenue in spring 2010. It is a counter with a few tables, a slice of salted honey or whatever is in season, and coffee. Nothing about it has scaled up in fifteen years.

Mon to Fri, 8am to 6pm. Sat, 9am to 7pm. Sun, 10am to 6pm

Penn District
Grace Street
Coffee

Coffee and shaved ice on West 32nd until eleven most nights and midnight on a weekend. The injeolmi bingsu is built for a table of four and takes a while to get through.

Sun to Wed, 11am to 11pm. Thu, to 11:30pm. Fri and Sat, to midnight

New Brunswick
Hidden Grounds Chai & Coffee House
Coffee

Started by two Rutgers graduates in a narrow storefront on Easton Avenue and still run out of New Brunswick, with masala chai made to order alongside the espresso. The Easton Avenue shop is the original and it is small, so people take the cups outside and stand. It is the one place downtown that is reliably open and reliably good at seven in the morning.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 6pm. Sat and Sun, 8am to 6pm

Morningside Heights
Hungarian Pastry Shop
Coffee

A counter across Amsterdam Avenue from the Cathedral of St. John the Divine, open since the early 1960s. Coffee refills are free and the pastries sit in a case you point at. There is no wifi. Columbia students have been writing papers at the small tables for decades and nobody moves them along.

Mon to Fri, 7:30am to 8:30pm. Sat and Sun, 8:30am to 8:30pm

Downtown Brooklyn
Hungry Ghost Coffee, DeKalb
Coffee

A small Hungry Ghost shop on DeKalb a block off Flatbush, with an espresso bar, a pastry case and a handful of seats and a window counter. The company roasts its own and has been opening shops around Brooklyn since 2009, so the coffee is consistent rather than experimental. It opens at 7am and closes at 5pm seven days a week, which makes it a daytime stop only.

Every day, 7am to 5pm

Chelsea
Intelligentsia Coffee, High Line Coffeebar
Coffee

A coffee bar in the lobby of the High Line Hotel, which occupies a wing of the General Theological Seminary on Tenth Avenue. There is a brick courtyard off the lobby with chairs under the plane trees, and in good weather that is where everyone sits. Pour overs and espresso, counter service, no table to be given.

Mon to Sun, 7am to 5pm

Murray Hill
Joe Coffee Company, Graybar Passage
Coffee

A counter in the tiled passage that runs from the main concourse out to Lexington Avenue, which means you drink it standing in a corridor of Grand Central with commuters going past. Joe started on Waverly Place in 2003 and roasts its own. Espresso and drip come by the cup. A cortado and a short pastry case fill out the counter.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 7pm. Sat and Sun, 9am to 6pm

Lower East Side
Kopitiam
Coffee

Kyo Pang cooks the Nyonya food she grew up with, and the coffee is kopi, brewed strong and poured over condensed milk. Kuih and toast come out through the day rather than only at breakfast. It sits down on East Broadway, below the busy Lower East Side blocks.

Daily, 10am to 10pm

West Nyack
L'Insolent Coffee
Coffee

A roaster on North Route 303 working with African beans, with a counter at the front for espresso and filter. Bags of the house roast and ready-to-drink cans are sold alongside the drinks. The company's other store is in Brooklyn. The schedule changes day to day, and Wednesday does not start until ten.

Mon, 7am to 5pm. Tue, 7am to 2pm. Wed, 10am to 5pm. Thu and Fri, 7am to 5pm. Sat and Sun, 8am to 3pm

Jackson Heights
La Gran Uruguaya Bakery
Coffee

A South American bakery counter on 37th Avenue with trays of bizcochos behind glass, chivito sandwiches to order and coffee at the register. The case changes through the day and the pastries are priced by the piece. There are a few tables inside and most people take a bag. The restaurant next door at 85-02 is the same family.

Daily, 8am to 9pm

Tribeca / Hudson Square
Laughing Man Coffee
Coffee

A small coffee counter on Duane Street with a handful of stools, open at six in the morning every day of the week. Hugh Jackman co-founded it and the stated arrangement sends profits to a foundation that buys from smallholder growers. The Tribeca shop is operated day to day under the Slate Cafe name.

Daily, 6am to 6pm

Upper East Side
Le Moulin à Café
Coffee

A French bakery counter at the front with tables behind it, on York Avenue in Yorkville. Croissants and tarts out of the case, and a short savory menu for lunch and dinner. It runs to 10pm on a Thursday and Friday, which is not something bakeries usually do.

Monday 7:30am to 6pm, Tuesday and Wednesday to 9pm, Thursday and Friday to 10pm, Saturday 8am to 10pm, Sunday 8am to 5pm

Upper East Side
Lexington Candy Shop
Coffee

A lunch counter that opened in 1925 and was last remodelled in 1948, which is the layout you walk into now. The candy side came in 1930 and went away after the war, so what is left is the fountain and the griddle. They still mix a Coke from syrup and soda in front of you. Stools at the counter, a handful of booths behind.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 5:45pm. Sat, 8am to 5:45pm. Sun, 8am to 4pm

Hell's Kitchen
Little Pie Company
Coffee

Sour cream apple walnut pie by the slice since 1985. Four tables and a case, and they will warm it if you ask.

Daily, 8am to 8pm

The Rockaways
Locals Collective
Coffee

A café and board storage run by the two men behind Locals Surf School, on Beach 69th Street a block off the sand. Espresso and drip from the bar, pastries in the case, and beer and wine if the coffee is not what you came for. People come in still damp from the water and nobody minds, and the racks of stored boards along the wall are the whole explanation of the place.

Daily, 7am to 5pm

Stamford
Lorca
Coffee

Leyla Dam Jenkins grew up in Spain, went back to Sevilla to learn to make churros at a small shop there, and opened this on Bedford Street. The churros come out hot with a cup of thick chocolate to dip them in, and the coffee is single-origin from roasters like Sey and Onyx, pulled as a cortado more often than anything else. It began as a sixteen-seat counter and took the space next door in 2020, so it now runs to around forty seats and you can usually sit down.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 6pm. Sat and Sun, 8am to 6pm

Yonkers
Mandy Bean Specialty Coffee
Coffee

An independent roastery on Central Park Avenue that opens at six in the morning and stays open to ten at night, midnight on Friday and Saturday. The drinks are made to order and the pastry case is not the usual wholesale tray. Those late hours are unusual for a coffee place anywhere in lower Westchester, which makes it one of the few places near the theater still serving after a screening.

Mon to Thu, 6am to 10pm. Fri and Sat, 6am to 12am. Sun, 6am to 10pm

Harlem
Manhattanville Coffee
Coffee

Open on Edgecombe Avenue since 2014, pulling Intelligentsia and pouring Kilogram tea, with pastries brought in from local bakers each morning. It sits at the foot of the Sugar Hill bluff where Edgecombe meets 141st. People work here for hours and nobody hurries them.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 5pm. Sat and Sun, 8am to 5pm

Forest Hills
Martha's Country Bakery
Coffee

A bakery on Austin Street with a long glass case that starts with cakes by the slice and cannoli. Cheesecake fills the other end. The coffee counter is beside it. It opens at six in the morning and runs to midnight, later on the weekend, which makes it the most useful set of hours in Forest Hills. There are tables inside and a few on the sidewalk.

Sun to Thu, 6am to midnight. Fri and Sat, 6am to 1am

Yonkers
Martine's Fine Bake Shoppe
Coffee

A French bakery in Scarsdale village run by a pastry chef trained in France, turning out croissants, éclairs and a case of cakes made on the premises. There are a few tables inside and coffee to go with it. Scarsdale's village center is a short strip of shops around the train station, and this is the one people cross the county for.

Tue to Sat, 7am to 6pm. Sun, 8am to 3pm. Closed Mon

West Village
McNulty's Tea & Coffee Co.
Coffee

Open on Christopher Street since 1895 and run by the Wong family since 1980. Glass jars and brass scoops sit along the counter, burlap sacks fill the floor, and the blends carry the names of customers who used to come in, including one named for Katharine Hepburn. You buy by the weight rather than by the cup.

Mon to Sat, 10am to 7pm. Sun, 11am to 5pm

Chinatown / Bowery
Mei Lai Wah
Coffee

A Chinatown bakery and coffee counter opened in 1968 by Mr and Mrs Chan, who had come from Taishan. After more than fifty years on Bayard Street it moved to a larger space at 41 Mott. A roast pork bun and a cup of coffee is what people go in for.

Coffee

A café on West 238th between Broadway and Riverdale Avenue that does espresso in the morning and wine later, with baked goods and sandwiches made on the premises. It opens at seven on weekdays. South Bronx / Melrose
Mottley Kitchen
Coffee

Omonia Cafe
Coffee

A Greek cafe on Broadway with a refrigerated case of galaktoboureko, ekmek and cakes cut to order, and a coffee counter that works from six in the morning until half past one the next night. People order a frappe and sit an hour at a marble-top table without anyone minding. There is waiter service at the tables rather than a line at a register. The Astoria branch is one of three, the others being in Bay Ridge and on the Upper West Side.

Daily, 6am to 1:30am

The espresso is pulled from Ethiopian beans roasted by Red House, and alongside it are Oromo chai, Yemeni-style karak and Turkish and Afghan teas. Rutherford
Red Kettle Coffee House
Coffee

A coffee house on a side street off Paterson Avenue in East Rutherford, pulling espresso and doing a short food menu rather than running a full kitchen. Sybil's Bakery & Restaurant
Coffee

Sybil Bernard-Kerrutt was a hairdresser from Guyana who started selling bread to friends, opened her first bakery in Jamaica in 1976, and later put this flagship in a yellow and turquoise triangular building on Liberty Avenue. Pine tarts, which are caramelized pineapple folded into a pastry triangle, are what to buy, by the half dozen. The currant roll is the other one. The savory side runs to pepper pot, the Guyanese beef stew made with cassareep, and goat roti. There is a counter line most of the day and it moves.

A coffee and tea merchant on Broad Street trading since 1869, still family owned, selling beans by the pound alongside roasted nuts and boiled sweets. The fittings are old and the smell carries out onto the sidewalk. It is a shop with a counter rather than a café with seats, so you take the cup with you.

Mon to Fri, 7:30am to 3:30pm. Sat, 9am to 2pm. Closed Sun

Flushing
Tai Pan Bakery
Coffee

Tongs and a metal tray at the door, then you load up on single-serving buns and pay at the register. The village coffee counter, open at six in the morning on Wheeler Avenue and busiest with people walking down to the train. Espresso, drip and pastry, ordered at the counter, with tables inside and a few on the sidewalk. The same owners run a counter in Croton-on-Hudson and one inside Phelps Hospital in Sleepy Hollow, and this is the storefront.

Mon to Fri, 6am to 5pm. Sat, 6:30am to 6pm. Sun, 7am to 5pm

Chelsea
The Grey Dog
Coffee

A coffee shop on West 16th just east of Eighth that also does eggs, sandwiches and a burger, from a counter you order at rather than a table you are seated at. Wooden chairs, old framed prints on the walls, mugs rather than paper cups if you are staying. It opens at eight and runs to nine at night every day of the week, which is a longer day than anything else on this block.

Mon to Sun, 8am to 9pm

White Plains
The Pamplemousse Project
Coffee

A café on Mamaroneck Avenue that gives all of its profit to local charities, which is the whole reason it exists rather than a line on a chalkboard. The coffee is Rainforest Alliance certified and the pastry comes in from New York bakeries. There is a counter of gourmet truffles and bulk candy on the way out.

Mon to Fri, 7am to 6pm. Sat and Sun, 8am to 6pm

Bushwick
Variety Coffee Roasters
Coffee

Variety roasts on site here and the smell of it is the first thing you get through the door. Bright, big enough to sit in, and open until 9pm, which almost nothing else on Wyckoff manages.

Daily 7am to 9pm

East Williamsburg
Variety Coffee Roasters, Graham Avenue
Coffee

The Graham Avenue branch of a Bushwick roaster that started on Wyckoff Avenue in 2008. It stays open until 9pm, which is unusual for coffee anywhere near these venues. Counter service and enough tables to sit down.

Daily 7am to 9pm.

East Village
Veniero's
Coffee

Antonio Veniero opened this pasticceria on East 11th Street in September 1894 and the pastry case still runs the length of the front. Cannoli are filled to order and you can sit down with an espresso behind the counter. They stop seating half an hour before close.

Sun to Thu, 8am to 10pm. Fri and Sat, 8am to 11pm

Penn District
Vesuvio Bakery
Coffee

Sfogliatelle and an espresso from the bakery that brought the old Prince Street name back in 2021. The Dapolito family baked under that green sign from 1920 until the storefront went dark.

Daily, 6am to 8pm

Upper East Side
Via Quadronno
Coffee

A narrow Milanese café on 73rd just off Madison, dark wood and a crowded bar, doing espresso and pressed panini from eight in the morning. The cappuccino is the thing people come back for and the sandwiches are made to order behind the counter. There is a proper kitchen at the back doing pasta if you want to sit down, but the front is where it works as a stop.

Mon to Fri, 8am to 10pm. Sat and Sun, 9am to 10pm. The kitchen closes at 9:30pm

Bronx
Zeppieri & Sons Italian Bakery
Coffee

An Italian bakery under the elevated 6 train on Buhre Avenue, started in 1968 by Carmine Zeppieri on nothing but S-rolls and pane di casa and now run by his sons and grandsons. The counter carries bread, sfogliatelle, cannoli and coffee from six in the morning until eight at night, seven days a week. It takes cash only, so stop at a machine on the way.

Daily, 6am to 8pm. Cash only
