Repertory Cinema · 209 W Houston St
The only autonomous nonprofit cinema in New York City, open all 365 days of the year, running new independents and documentaries on some screens and Bruce Goldstein's repertory program on others.
The Houston Street building was put up in 1990 at a cost of $3.2 million. Two of the four screens are held for extended runs, which is how a documentary that finds an audience stays on for weeks instead of a week.
The repertory side dates to 1987 and covers foreign and American classics, genre work and director retrospectives. Premieres are programmed separately, by Mike Maggiore and Ruth Somalo.
The economics are unusual and published: a roughly $7 million operating budget with about 80 percent spent directly on programs, up to 250,000 admissions a year, more than 6,000 members, and an endowment begun in 2000 with a Ford Foundation gift.
