Greenwich Village
Arturo's Coal Oven Pizza
Food

Arturo Giunta opened this in 1957 on MacDougal Street and moved it to the corner of Houston and Thompson in the early sixties. His children Lisa and Scott run it now. The oven is coal-fired, pizza is sold only by the whole pie, and there is live jazz at the bar from seven every evening.

Daily, 5pm to 11pm. Live jazz nightly, 7pm to 11pm

Caffè Reggio
Coffee

Domenico Parisi opened this on MacDougal Street in 1927 and the 1902 espresso machine he bought is still standing in the front. The walls are hung with Italian paintings and an old Medici bench, and nobody hurries you off a marble table. It runs to three in the morning most nights, which is later than almost any other café in the neighborhood.

Greenwich Village
Faicco's Italian Specialties
Food

A butcher counter and sandwich operation that has been on Bleecker Street since the start of the last century. The thing to order is the Italian special hero or a rice ball from the fried case by the register. It is takeout, so plan to eat it on a bench rather than at a table.

Closed Mon. Tue to Sat, 9am to 6pm. Sun, 9am to 2pm. Sunday close is reported as 2pm or 3pm depending on the listing

IFC Center
Culture

A five-screen cinema in the old Waverly Theater building at Sixth Avenue and West 3rd, running new independent releases alongside a midnight series on Friday and Saturday. The midnight slot is the reason to know about it, because almost nothing else in the neighborhood programs that late. Tickets are sold at a street-level box office.

Mon to Thu and Sun, 10:30am to 10:30pm. Fri and Sat, 10:30am to 12:30am. The box office opens 15 minutes before the first screening and closes 20 minutes after the last one starts

Jefferson Market Library
Culture

A Victorian Gothic courthouse from 1877 that became a branch library, with a clock tower whose fire bell still strikes the hours from 9am to 10pm. The reading areas sit under the old courtroom windows and anybody can walk in. The garden alongside it occupies the site of the jail that used to stand there.

Library: Mon to Thu, 10am to 8pm. Fri and Sat, 10am to 5pm. Sun, 1pm to 5pm. The adjoining Jefferson Market Garden keeps irregular volunteer hours, most reliably Tuesday and Thursday mornings from mid-April through September

Greenwich Village
Joe's Pizza
Food

Joe Pozzuoli opened this in 1975 and it has been on the Carmine Street corner ever since, aside from one forced move a few doors down and back. The plain slice is the whole argument. There are no tables worth the name, you eat standing at the counter or on the sidewalk, and the line moves as fast as the oven does.

Mon to Thu and Sun, 10am to 3am. Fri and Sat, 10am to 4am

Greenwich Village
John's of Bleecker Street
Food

John Sasso moved his coal oven here in 1929 and the same oven is still the only one they use. They sell whole pies and nothing by the slice, which they will tell you at the door. The wooden booths are carved half through with initials going back decades and nobody has ever sanded them.

Greenwich Village
Mamoun's Falafel
Food

A narrow counter on MacDougal that has been selling falafel sandwiches since 1971. You order at the register, take it to one of the few stools or eat it walking. The hot sauce is the part people come back for and it is served from a squeeze bottle, not a ramekin.

Mon to Wed, 11am to 2am. Thu, 11am to 3am. Fri and Sat, 11am to 4am. Sun, 11am to 1am

Minetta Tavern
Food

A tavern on the corner of Minetta Lane that opened in 1937, named for the brook that ran under this block down to the Hudson. Hemingway, Ezra Pound and Dylan Thomas all drank here. Keith McNally took it over in 2008 and reopened it the following year as a French bistro built around dry-aged beef.

Dinner daily, 5pm to midnight. Lunch Wed to Fri, noon to 3:30pm. Brunch Sat and Sun, 11am to 3:30pm

Pasticceria Rocco
Food

Rocco Generoso has been filling cannoli to order at 243 Bleecker since 1974, in the storefront he took over from the previous bakery. There are cafe tables at the back and a full counter of Italian pastry at the front. It stays open until midnight on Friday and Saturday, which is unusual for a bakery.

Mon to Wed, 7am to 10pm. Thu, 7am to 11pm. Fri and Sat, 7am to midnight. Sun, 7am to 10pm

Greenwich Village
Peculier Pub
Drinks

A basement-level beer bar on Bleecker that carries several hundred bottles from around the world, with old church pews for seating and initials carved into the tables. It is dark and loud and nobody is dressed for it. The kitchen is limited, so come for the beer list.

Mon, 4pm to 1am. Tue and Wed, 4pm to 2am. Thu, 4pm to 3am. Fri, 3pm to 4am. Sat, 1pm to 4am. Sun, 3pm to 12:30am

Greenwich Village
Porto Rico Importing Co.
Coffee

Pasquale Albanese started this on Bleecker Street in 1907 and the Longo family bought it in 1958. Burlap sacks of green and roasted beans line the floor and the smell reaches the sidewalk. There is a small counter for espresso and iced coffee if you do not want a pound of beans.

Washington Square Park
Outside

Nine and a half acres with a fountain in the middle and a marble arch at the north end, and on any warm afternoon several musicians working different corners of it at once. The stone chess tables on the southwest side are in use most of the day. It is the closest open ground to every venue on Bleecker Street.

Open daily until midnight, with a 10pm close on Friday, Saturday and Sunday under a curfew introduced in 2021. The playground closes at 6pm from November to March and 9pm from March to October

Greenwich Village
Waverly Diner
Food

A corner diner at Sixth Avenue and Waverly Place with vinyl booths and a counter, and a menu long enough to cover breakfast at any hour. Triple-decker sandwiches and burger platters are what it is known for. It has spent years advertising itself as a 24-hour diner, though current listings post a late-evening close instead.

Listings updated September 2026 post 7am to 11pm Sunday through Wednesday and 7am to midnight Thursday through Saturday. Older listings and the NYC Tourism entry still describe it as open 24 hours, so check before a very late walk
